A FEW GENERIC SYNONYMS
IF YOU CAN'T FIND THE GENERIC (GENUS) NAME OF THE MOTH YOU ARE SEEKING IN THE MAIN INDEX, CHECK TO SEE IF IT APPEARS BELOW:

These particular generic names have been selected only because they reflect the synonymy of some of the genera that appear in the Ash Canyon (AZ) and Beverly Hills (CA) moth lists, as presented at this website. Many of these names were the ones that appeared in Part I of J. McDunnough's Lepidoptera checklist (1938), and/or in W.J. Holland's The Moth Book (1903, 1968), and were, in fact, the only names in use for the first 45 years of my own lifetime. Therefore, many of these older names (Col. 1) were commited to memory by earlier workers, myself included!....Now, mostly just the names appearing in Col. 2 apply. The paired sets of lists below are alphabetized to permit one to go either way with the synonymy -- old to recent OR recent (since ± 1983) to old.

MANY moth generic names, that had been in use for decades, have been "shuffled" or changed or synonymized more-or-less recently. And, no doubt others will also (rightfully) be relegated to the dust-bin of synonyms in the future, as our knowledge (about relationships in the worldwide moth faunas) gradually increases. So enjoy your favorites while they are still in vogue! (There will be MORE changes coming, rest assured....) The younger you are, the less will the lists below have any meaning. But, if you are working with an older book or collection (or are yourself beyond your second decade), some of these listed synonyms may prove to be helpful memory-joggers. For additional comments on this topic, see the TAXONOMY section in the Introduction.
